Fly a kite and grab a bite!

By  |

“You may not be able to collect all the shells by the beach, but you can definitely walk away with a lot of memories.”

It was worth braving the search for the coveted parking spot to witness and experience the buzz that’s going to last until the end of this month, which is the Beach Canteen at Kite Beach, Jumeirah. For joggers, strollers, bicycle enthusiasts, kite flying experts (and amateurs), divers and ‘foodies’, the Kite Beach has a lot to offer even when it comes to food.

The beach canteen is one of the many feathers of the Dubai Food Festival’s hat that has been put together in a strategic location in Dubai. There’s live music to bob your head to, bean bags to relax on, friendly and open table tennis spots to hit or miss the ping pong ball from and towering trails of various aromas to follow. In addition to this, celebrity chefs add some sparkle to the event through live demos and interactive interviews.

Of course, my blog was not designed to just talk about great food and miss out on the food safety aspects (which is an under understood subject).

When it comes to food and outdoor events, you want to make sure that you’re not just focusing on the number of ‘covers’ covered but also the safety of the food and beverage being served when elements such as the weather are not always within your control. Two things that need to be considered here are temperature and storage conditions. The Beach Canteen has been designed to take these elements into consideration which probably explains why it’s been really running well. In fact, most of the operators sold out even before mid-day and that definitely does speak volumes.

When asked for directions once, I said, “Follow the trail of kites if you’re visiting during the day and the aroma will guide the rest of the way.” You just can’t miss the stacked cargo containers that have been arranged to nest the ‘canteens’ within them.

Moylo's signature burger sauce wins this round. It's a K.O

Moylo’s signature burger sauce wins this round.
It’s a K.O

I’ve tasted many burgers back in the day (I am currently 60 going on 70) and I must say, Moylo’s has raised the bar here. It’s simple yet subtle delivery needs to be appreciated. While I was waiting in line, I couldn’t help but notice that the manager, John Barron wasn’t around. Why?

Because he was multi-tasking by the prep table- slicing buns, assembling burgers and keeping an eye on the stocks since, like most others, they too were selling out quickly.

Moylos encompasses the tale of Ismail Al Sharif and his experimentation with burger sauces.

I must admit, I haven't quite tasted fries like the ones I had at Moylos. In John's words, "People think there's garlic in it, but there isn't." Very distinct indeed.

I’m going to spill the beans about this next pit stop of mine. The person I had mistaken for a customer waiting in line, turned out to be the founder of Spill the Bean, rocking a baby carrier with an adorable little bundle of ‘aww’. This wonder mum is proudly supported by her husband and their charisma really speaks through the brand.

The Beach Canteen comes with a fair warning – you must carry a massive appetite to do this place real justice. It has been rated as suitable for children and bigger children (adults) of all ages (and sizes).

Unfortunately, this is the last leg of the race and it will come to an end as March rolls around.
